  • Does Smith Fear the Impact of Smith Watch?

    by: Lisa Hannah

Sat Nov 03, 2007 at 16:11:28 PM CDT

(Unbelievable. - promoted by Ryan Anderson)

(I just posted this on my website, but felt I had to put it on here as well. It shows Smith's true character - Lisa)

A while back, I noticed that whenever I clicked on the link from my website to Adrian Smith's Congressional website, I'd get the following message:

    Not Found
The requested URL was not found on this server.

I'm sure others have noticed this as well if they've tried.

So, I started getting in contact with the Blogger.com technical support to determine what the problem was.

We went through several different things that are usually tried to see if there is just some error happening: Deleted and reentered, tried taking the slash off at the end, added the link with AND without the "www" at the beginning, even tried to do a hand coding of the link rather than using the pre-set "widget" that stored a list of links. Nothing worked. The same error occurred.

Finally I asked the team: Could there be something on Smith's end actually blocking my site, maybe even on purpose? Is that even possible?

Lisa Hannah :: Does Smith Fear the Impact of Smith Watch?
I got my response today. Some of it is technical, and I don't understand it, but what the tech wrote is very clear in explaining what they found (emphasis is mine):

The problem isn't with your link. It's with THEIR server. It's rejecting (giving a 404) when the link comes from blogspot. What a douche this guy is. He's blocking requests when it comes from bloggers.

Ok, to explain. Whenever you click on a link, the browser sends off a request to the server...yadda yadda...included in that is the referrer of the page you came from. His Official Government Website, that WE pay for (well I'm guessing on that part), is throwing up a 404 when the referrer heading comes from blogspot.com. I tested from one of my test blogs and it doesn't work either, also uploaded a test page to googlepages (a different domain) and it works. So it really is blogspot they are blocking via the referrer.

Here's the rejected conversation from blogspot

    http://www.adriansmi...
    GET / HTTP/1.1

The ONLY difference between the two is the referrer. And the congressman's server is basically rejecting anything with a blogspot referrer. I'm tempted to say that maybe, just maybe this is some sort of technical error, but really there is no reason for that. It HAS to be done deliberately.

Looks like you can get a new blog post out of this. Congressman Adrian Smith is afraid of Bloggers!

So to sum up, everything on your end is correct. It's the dear congressman that is playing games. Notice how his taxpayer server is also configured to Identify itself as NOYB (none of your business). Nice guy. Nebraska huh? Without looking I'm going to guess he's a Republican.

And here's the link I made on a test blog
    http://br-testing.blogspot.com/

It's being blocked as well. So it's anything from blogspot. Looking around, I don't see many others but you linking to him from blogspot, so it must've been you that scared him. Great Work!!!

That's just such a pathetic thing for them to do. I shouldn't be surprised I suppose, but good god.

So, it appears that any link from Blogspot is PURPOSELY BLOCKED FROM GAINING ACCESS.

That's right, the website we pay for as taxpayers cannot be accessed in this manner. You can access the link on the New Nebraska Network site, but not through mine.

And it's only Smith's website that does it. If you look at the "Relevant Links" on the side of my webpage, you'll see I've now added Nebraska's other 2 Congressmen, Jeff Fortenberry and Lee Terry. When you click on their links, they go straight to their Congressional websites.

The question, then, is WHY would Adrian Smith and his staff do such a thing? Just what about a link to his Congressional website from mine is a concern to them? Could they actually be nervous about the things I expose about Smith on a regular basis?

When you combine this action, and the fact that they refused to provide copies of what are publically available reports(Financial Disclosed, Franked Mail, Gift and Travel) after months of attempts, this can only lead to one conclusion:

Adrian Smith fears dissent. He fears truth. He fears anything that shows the REAL Adrian, rather than the false image he continues to try and portray. In other words - HE FEARS ME!

The fact is that I, like anyone else, am a private, voting citizen of the 3rd District of Nebraska. And just like all other citizens of this District, my tax dollars pay his salary, and they pay for his website. Just like all citizens, I have a right to my opinions, and I have a right to voice those opinions, whether he agrees with them or not. I have a right to question him, I have a right to hold him accountable, and I have a right to demand that he represent EVERYONE: Not just those that voted for him, not just those that are in one party, not just those that paid for his campaign, and not just those that will never disagree with him.

These actions show a man that is NOT a Representative of the people he was elected to work for, and someone who fails to live up to the oath of office that he took. That oath states:

I solemnly swear or affirm that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter, so help me God.

Adrian Smith is not bearing true faith and allegiance to the Constitution by trying to limit dissent, or this case, do the childish act of blocking access from a specific site. He's also not faithfully discharging the duties of his office, which is to serve ALL of his constituents.

Not only are his actions unjustified, they are downright pathetic, and he doesn't deserve the title of Congressman.

I love the editorializing of the blogspot techie. I hope the media picks this story up.

    I agree... (0.00 / 0)
This needs to be publicized.  Widely.  What an insult to his constituents.  Accountability?  Transparency?  They must not exist in Mr. Smith's world.  (Unless of course we're talking about the Patriot act.)  Good grief.

I submitted this article to Digg. This is the kind of story their audience would be interested in. If anyone has a Digg account (or wants to create one), head over to http://digg.com/poli... and digg it to bring more exposure to Adrian's ridiculous attempt to shut out bloggers.

    Holy Mackerel! (0.00 / 0)
Truth always has a way of coming to the surface.  Especially with Lisa Hannah on the trail.

    Sheesh (0.00 / 0)
The thing is that in addition to being plain wrong, you're right, it's downright pathetic. All you have to do is link to it through another site ( http://tinyurl.com/2... , for example). Of course you probably shouldn't, because getting the 404s is a better rhetorical move. What a yutz.

This definitely deserves national recognition (0.00 / 0)
This is a whole new level of patheticness for Adrian Smith.  Let's do our part to get the word out and apply serious blog pressure on Smith to make sure no other Congressmen attempt something so fundamentally corrupt and undemocratic.

Has anyone posted this on kos yet? (0.00 / 0)

Wonder how long Blogspot has been blocked? (0.00 / 0)
The original New Nebraska Network was at a Blogspot address until we moved over to the new format this year.  I like to think we also helped push Smith to make such an embarrassing and cowardly ass of himself.

    It's recent (0.00 / 0)
I'd say in the last 2-3 months. I noticed it, but then kept putting off trying to find out the cause. But it linked before, then suddenly one day it didn't.

Because it was Kyle that was a major influence (in how he'd been doing this so well on his own for quite a while). He also was a great support when I decided to dip my toes in the blogging arena. He was holding Nebraska's politicians feet to the fire long before me!!

    Please read... (0.00 / 0)
    To whom it may concern,

GovTrends is the official website vendor for Nebraska's Third District Congressman Adrian Smith. As a disclaimer, we are a bi-partisan technology vendor providing web services to many congressional offices. We are very concerned with the misunderstanding that has been brought to our attention by Congressman Smith's office.

We were contacted by the congressman's office regarding the problem bloggers on Blogspot were having linking to the congressman's website. Upon further investigation we discovered our servers were set by default to block all referring traffic from Blogspot due to the proliferation of spammers. So, in effect, this 'blocking' of Blogspot is affecting all of the websites on our server - both Democrat and Republican. To be clear, neither us nor our client were aware of the blocking being done prior to today (we have over 2000 different websites on our blacklist that we download from gotroot.com) and we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused Blogspot bloggers.

We are currently researching a solution that will relieve this situation as soon as possible. If we feel that Blogspot does not pose a spamming threat to any of our clients' websites or our servers, we will allow its incoming traffic. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and hope to have this resolved soon.

    Best Regards,
    GovTrends

how about letting us verify these claims? (0.00 / 0)
It would be nice if you could explain this in any kind of way that could be verified. Why would you flag blogspot as a spam site? Do you have a lot of problems with link spammers taking down Congressional web pages?

I checked the pages of every single Senator, and they all link from blogspot just fine. I'm not sure if I'll have time to check every house member today. Who are your other clients that this is supposedly affecting?

    [ Parent ]
    I just called GovTrack (0.00 / 0)
and asked them what other website they have developed for Congressman and women.

First I asked if they did Lee Terry's webstie and he prompty told me no, so I asked what ones they did do and he told me he didn't know any Congressman they did sites for.

Tip toeing around the problem telling me he wasn't the persont to talk to and wanting to know where I was from and it was a waste of time.

I would like a way to verify this claim.

Nebraska Netroots | A new community blog for Nebraska Democrats!

    [ Parent ]
    I DID JUST THAT! (0.00 / 0)
I just updated my website, but here's the summary:

When I asked them for a list of the members of Congress they currently served, THEY REFUSED. I'ved asked for it in writing, and have gotten nothing.

I tested every company listed on their website, INCLUDING THEIR OWN ADDRESS, by linking it from my blogspot page. Result?

So far, their own site and the ones I've tested that I can see they run have all been accessible through Blogspot.com. So, that leads to the question: Is this automatic blocking only occuring on servers for members of Congress? Is that even believable? And just how many members of Congress do they actually work for since they're not providing a list?

This creates MORE questions, NOT LESS.

    [ Parent ]
    Meanwhile, (0.00 / 0)
you still can't link to his site from blogspot.com. Maybe it was a mistake, but no one has bothered to even attempt to fix it. That's awfully convenient.

in the mean time, would you be willing to go to your Digg post and post what I found out? Mike....... (0.00 / 0)
I already said I sent out what I wrote this weekend.

PLEASE don't be calling GovTrack on this matter. I've been dealing with it. Just let it go and we will see what happens. If they respond to my written request for members of Congress that they initially refused, I will research and then post the findings.

If NOT, it's a story as is because:
    1) Smith's people refused to speak for themselves, letting the websites managers take the hit.
    2) They refused to cooperate with any type of verification process.

This story will find it's own way. It's gotten to a lot of places today. If there is more in it, it will happen. If not, this is STILL fodder for use against him when the time comes for him to try and get reelected.

As my husband just commented, it's the first play of the game. No need to throw a Hail Mary.

    update (0.00 / 0)
Here's an update I made to the kos story.

So it turns out that this isn't just an Adrian Smith problem. If Smith is indeed afraid of Smith Watch, the blocking of blogger traffic doesn't seem to be his doing. GovTrends, who hosts Smith's web site, has a policy of not allowing blogspot.com links on any of the Congressional web sites they host. You won't, however, have any problem linking to any of their corporate clients from a blogspot.com domain. They wouldn't tell us who their Congressional clients were, so I tested every single Senator, Representative, and Delegate's official web site and found  the same issue with the following 36 members of congress (no Senator's site had the problem):

    Rick Boucher
    Robert Brady
    Mike Castle
    Jim Cooper
    Jim Costa
    Peter DeFazio
    Keith Ellison
    Brad Ellsworth
    Anna Eshoo
    Terry Everett
    Sam Farr
    Charles Gonzalez
    Alcee Hastings
    Paul Kanjorski
    Tom Lantos
    John Lewis
    Daniel Lipinski
    Dan Lungren
    Tim Mahoney
    Kenny Marchant
    Jerry Moran
    Patrick Murphy
    Eleanor Holmes Norton
    Solomon Ortiz
    Ed Pastor
    Nick Rahall
    Thomas Reynolds
    Ciro Rodriguez
    Tim Ryan
    Loretta Sanchez
    Louise Slaughter
    Adrian Smith
    Tom Udall
    Peter Welch
    Charlie Wilson
    Alber Wynn

I guess I'm still trying to figure out why this is better. They don't seem to want to change the policy even now that they've gotten complaints. Thanks to everybody who put pressure on Smith to actually address this issue. It looks like you've helped bring light to a problem which is more systemic and will likely end up with a happy resolution.

    Eric.... (0.00 / 0)
This doesn't explain why Smith's people never return calls or emails to answer questions that may be challenging. They maybe could have cleared this up if they hadn't established a clear pattern of stonewalling and secrecy.

This also isn't clear if it's this company that's doing all these. They refused to name their client list. In the mean time, they've got bloggers now scrambling to do their work for them and create confusion and further speculation. Interesting that in one of their rebuttals to try and explain further, they used Adrian Smith's Campaign site as an example. Do they do both? Fascinating....campaign and official government sites done by the same company. That's just not right, in my book.

I'm personally just going to sit back and see what Smith, along with this company, decide to do, and they will have to explain themselves. That's not for us to keep scrambling about to try and figure out.

    [ Parent ]
more from the kos article (0.00 / 0)
So the GovTrends people responded on the kos article as well as a few other places around here with the following:

    Hello,

Our role at GovTrends is to provide our client's on both sides of the aisle websites that are safe and accessible by everyone on the Internet.

We, here at GovTrends, want to give you and your readers an accurate explanation of what is happening with the Blogspot refer links.

Servers have different requirements - some are less strict then others. There are dozens of servers hosting congressional website, each with different requirements because of various website vendors and differing technologies.

How does this affect congressional websites? Every congressional website has email forms that can, with enough effort, be highjacked by spam robots to be used to send spam through congressional servers to random people. Our goal is to minimize this type of spam by blocking potential threats.

Due to strict security requirements and high volume of "spider" generated spam congressional websites receive, we use the blacklist definitions of gotroots.com as they are reputable for providing security config files. In the case of the "blacklist config" file, line 7060 - blocks refers from " #SecFilterSelective HTTP_Referer|ARGS www.*\.blogspot due to spamming issues.

Add the link http://www.joinadria... to your blogspot account and you will see the site. It's a different server, different vendor, runs different technology, just more prone to spam.

We are currently unblocking blogspot temperately for our congressional clients, and will monitor refers and traffic.  Should these refer links cause harm or increased amounts of spider spam, we will review and block the http refers again WITHOUT WARNING. This decision is ours as our number one priority is security for all our congressional clients. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

    Best Regards,
    GovTrends
    Network Support

So I updated the story as follows:

UPDATE (11/06/2007): The web host responsible for the problem has decided to lift the ban on blogspot sites. They left a comment below which you can read. They also say that
Should these refer links cause harm or increased amounts of spider spam, we will review and block the http refers again WITHOUT WARNING. This decision is ours as our number one priority is security for all our congressional clients.

So basically they reserve the right to block bloggers again in the future (probably once the pressure dies down) for whatever reason they see fit. That's like blocking all email coming from "@yahoo.com" accounts because you received a few spam emails from yahoo accounts. With that approach to security, I recommend simply unplugging the server from the power source. That will ensure no spam and is 100% effective.

It is still probably a good idea to contact your Representative if they appear on the list above and urge them to move to a web host that is a little closer to "freedom" on the "freedom vs. security" spectrum.

Also, the line they mentioned in the blacklist file is commented out in both the original file on gotroot.com as well as in their response. That is what the "#" means. Basically, that line will be ignored, so it shouldn't affect the functionality of their server. Either they uncommented it originally or some other line in the file is the culprit. Oh well, the point is that the links work now, and we'll see how long they stay that way.

    This is what happens..... (0.00 / 0)
...when a Congressman and his staff refuse to communicate

I have to tell you, yesterday was a very interesting day. It was fascinating to see things unfold.

This actually proved a good example of what WILL happen every time Adrian Smith and his staff continue with the policy of refusing to communicate.

For the last 10 months, Smith and his staff have made it clear through their actions that they will NOT answer questions, or provide anything else to those that question Smith's actions. They refuse to a return phone calls (with the exception of once since they learned what I was doing), they refuse to answer letters and emails, they refuse to provide publicly available reports that they have to send out for those who don't live in the DC area. They block access to Smith unless it's on their terms, they create scenarios where he's only presented in a certain light.

In other words, what you see and what you perceive is severely controlled.

In trying to figure out at the website issue, nothing came from Smith's office. Not a word. Given their history of negative actions, one was only left with speculation. Every time I've tried to get their side of a story, and tried to be fair....Nothing. And so far, when I've speculated, I've been on target.

If I got this one off line a bit, so be it. I wasn't that far off. I just went off a report, got no rebuttal, and then took history into account. Maybe in the future they will learn that it's actually a good idea to talk, to communicate, to open the lines between Smith and those who disagree with him.

But that still doesn't explain their ongoing silence and ongoing willingness to let the private company take the fall. Nothing that company said could be 100% validated because they refused to provide a list of other government sites they ran, and they refused to do anything but say "take our word for it". That's not good enough.

What is a government official doing going to a private web contractor in the first place? What was wrong with just using the House servers? And if this companies servers can't handle it, then maybe Smith needs to forgo the fancy, self-promoting site they've set up and just settle for the VERY adequate template that was provided by the House tech support. There was nothing wrong with it and it provided all the necessary information (along with the ability to self promote) that constituents needed.

Matter of fact, maybe Smith should step up to the plate to fight government waste, and submit a bill that would prevent members of Congress from spending EXTRA taxpayer money on websites that are more like campaign sites? Now THAT would be true fiscal conservatism!!

I'm disappointed but not surprised that Smith's office decided to duck their heads and hide. That's the usual practice for them. But I hope in the future they will learn it's actually a good idea to speak to people who won't always agree with them. I've always told them I am very willing to have an open dialogue and to really listen (as long as the political spin and BS is removed and the REAL Adrian allows himself to speak). Hell, I might even like the guy if they did that!

    And in the end, (0.00 / 0)
you forced a change in a really stupid government policy. Congrats.
