  • NNN Welcomes President Bush to Omaha

    by: Kyle Michaelis

Wed Dec 05, 2007 at 01:31:45 AM CST

Some very wealthy Nebraskans will be paying $10,000 to have their picture taken with President George W. Bush at a fundraiser being held this morning for Mike Johanns' Senate campaign. To celebrate Bush's visit to Nebraska and his close relationship with Johanns, it seemed a fitting time to take another look at a few comments Sen. Chuck Hagel made last week about the Bush Administration - an administration in which Johanns served until just two months ago.

    Take it away, Chuck:

    "They Have Failed the Country!"
Kyle Michaelis :: NNN Welcomes President Bush to Omaha
"One of the Most Arrogant, Incompetent Administrations . . . .

"The Lowest in Capacity, in Capability, in Policy, in Consensus . . . .

"I Would Give [Them] the Lowest Grade."
    -Sen. Chuck Hagel (11/28/2007)

I can't help but think that this should be what we should be focusing on right now.

Of course, Chuck will be at that little fete for Johanns and Bush. They'll be all smiles and they'll be smokin' big cigars.

    phat

    Great Point (0.00 / 0)
So might as well get the ball rolling by looking at the coverage for the event.

We all know that Johanns' boss is deeply unpopular even here in Nebraska, scoreing a favorability of just 41% in the Daily Kos poll.

As far as I know this is the only public poll on Bush and Nebraska in the last year.  So of course, it was referenced in the Omaha World Herald's lead-up story, right?

Nope.  Instead we get this doozy:

U.S. Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb., said he has seen a couple of recent non-public polls that suggest Bush's numbers in Nebraska have edged back above 50 percent approval. This while his national numbers are in the low 30s.

Well of course!  If Lee Terry says it, it must be true.  Because Lee Terry would never lie ... oh wait.

So we have a historically unpopular President stumping for one of his underlings and the largest paper in the state tries to make him seem popular.

    That seems about right.

    That's not egregious or anything (0.00 / 0)
    Sheesh.

The radio in Lincoln (KFOR anyway) has just been focusing on Bush's comments about Iran.

    Heckuva job, Mikey... (0.00 / 0)
I can't stomach the idea of Senator Mike Johanns.

    Lifelong Democrat (0.00 / 0)
    Mike Johanns switches parties.

    What year did he switch?

    That would be 1988.

    Bucking the Beltway Boys (0.00 / 0)
I think there can be no doubt that the Beltway Boys have their candidate saddled up in the person of Lifelong Republican Tony Raimondo. This from the DSCC website:

In 2006, Senator Ben Nelson defeated his Republican opponent, who spent $13 million of his own money, because of his effectiveness and independence. The Democratic nominee will reflect that same winning strategy.

How do they know that the Democratic nominee will do that? I believe it has already been decided that Ben's best bud will follow his footsteps. Anyone else thinking about running for NE-SEN will be bucking the Big Boys. Who better than an ex rodeo rider?

    Effectiveness, Independence, and Winning (0.00 / 0)
Which of these qualities are you taking issue with in our eventual nominee?  And, precisely which of these qualities do you seem to believe Scott Kleeb is lacking?

    [ Parent ]
    Maybe (0.00 / 0)
When I first read that quote (too quickly) I took it as meaning that the Dem candidate would be spending a large amount of his own money.  Obviously that is not what it said.  Don't know if that is how Brian took it (he can certainly speak for himself!).

    There you go . . . (0.00 / 0)
. . . putting words in my mouth again, Kyle.

I read "reflecting that same winning strategy" as "controlled by Ben Nelson," but then again I'm just wearing my tin foil beanie today.

The strategy that got Ben Nelson re-elected by such an overwhelming margin was, in my opinion, one of taking the Democratic voters for granted and pandering to the right. It worked very successfully, for one candidate . . . Ben. It did nothing to build our party, based on our principles, failed other Democratic candidates, and left a vacuum in its wake.

How in the hell you can deduce, from what I wrote, that I believe Scott Kleeb is lacking anything leads me to believe you have a ten gallon foil Stetson of your own.

    You know (0.00 / 0)
This thread is not about Ben Nelson at all.  It's about Mike Johanns who the eventual nominee will have to beat - WHOEVER that nominee is.

I'm not sure that I've ever seen you post about deficiences of Johanns or help in the research effort to look into his record; normally, I just let it go.

But you are hijacking a thread about Johanns to bash Ben Nelson more.  Maybe you should focus on the, you know, candidate we actually have to beat.

Since I am for beating Republicans, I'll end on....

"About a Republican" - George Bush visited a community health center in Omaha to stump for Mike Johanns.  However, while he was patting himself on the back, he neglected to mention that he had recently vetoed a funding bill that would provide more money for community health centers.  Bush's own budget would have kept last year's funding level (which is effectively a cut because of inflation).  No word on whether Johanns would have supported this but c'mon, of course he would have.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear at least 2 TV stations (KLKN and I forget the other) mention this veto at the end of their reporting on the Bush visit.

    Magic (0.00 / 0)
Magicians are able to perform their feats by getting their viewers' eyes to follow the hand that isn't doing the trick. They want the entire audience to be distracted so that they might be able to perform their slight of hand.

There are plenty of others that are doing what you want to have them do, Duck. If every single one of us is out eyeballing the competition all the time, who's going to mind the store? Or should we just TRUST that nobody will be shoplifting or dipping into the till while we are all outside chasing the stray dogs away from the door?

    [ Parent ]
    ummm... (0.00 / 0)
Even if you get an amazing candidate, you still have to beat someone.  Informing voters about the Republicans is half the battle (more than half when it comes to someone like Johanns who has been relentlessly propped by Nebraska media and whitewashed to high heaven).

But if you aren't into that, and you don't have to be, that's fine.  But don't hijack every thread.

Most people can walk and chew gum at the same time.  Nothing "magical" about that.

    [ Parent ]
    Hijack? (0.00 / 0)
Glad to see the Thought Police are in full force today. You know Duck, I promised to be nice during the Christmas season, but you make it so darned difficult for me to behave.

    [ Parent ]
    Yes (0.00 / 0)
This thread is not about Ben Nelson.  And it's not an open thread.  Generally, the tubes of the internet consider it to be hijacking when one repeatedly posts about non-related subject matter.  If you wanted to talk about how Ben Nelson is horrible, start another thread.

That's not "Thought Police" - it's generally accepted practices and good manners.

    [ Parent ]
    Informing (0.00 / 0)
Informing voters about the Republicans is half the battle.

That's what we're doing here, Duck, informing the folks about Lifelong Republican (2 day Democrat) Tony Raimondo and the threat of an impending coronation of him by the Beltway Boys.

Johanns in the past couple of days has just been smoke and mirrors to keep our eyes diverted from what's happening behind the curtain.

    [ Parent ]
    See? (0.00 / 0)
I'm just going to stop this here because you're already working way too hard to turn this thread about Johanns and Bush (and Hagel) into a pissing match about something unrelated.

But, by all means, consider Johanns to be smoke and mirrors.  When he is elected to the Senate (because everyone thinks he's a swell guy), you can then pretend he doesn't exist.

    True enough (0.00 / 0)
Sorry, no time to comment, but yeah. Not everything has to do with Ben Nelson.
