  • Esch Kicks Off Campaign In Omaha

    by: Dave Sund

Thu Apr 03, 2008 at 01:24:05 AM CDT

Jim Esch held his campaign kickoff at the IBEW Hall in Omaha, Nebraska tonight. Former Congressman John Cavanaugh and Public Service Commissioner Anne Boyle kicked off the event, and introduced Jim Esch to an enthusiastic crowd of supporters.

Esch laid out his vision for this race, which he says will be about change and leadership in Washington. The former was a key theme of Esch's last campaign for Congress, while the latter has been sorely lacking from Rep. Lee Terry.

    Some of the highlights:

  • Esch said he has asked Lee Terry to reject PAC money, and if Terry did, Esch would do the same. Otherwise, Esch said, he's not going to run with one hand tied behind his back.

  • He recognized that this race is going to be tougher, that it will not be an "under the radar" race this time, and that Terry won't ignore him this time. (I can attest to this, as I have seen a Lee Terry fundraising letter that calls out Jim Esch and Richard Carter by name, in addition to roughly a dozen uses of the word "liberal.")

  • He laid out quite clearly how Lee Terry has failed this district, using one of my favorite comparisons from the 2006 campaign: Hal Daub. Now, readers of the New Nebraska Network - and the crowd at this kickoff event, including Daub's former mayoral opponent Brenda Council, - don't agree with Daub's politics. But, Esch pointed out, Daub as a Congressman did write and pass a significant number of bills. Lee Terry? Wrote a bill to rename a post office.
  • I came away impressed, both with the turnout for the event, and the candidate. It appears that Esch is picking up where he left off in 2006, but he's promising a new, improved version of the campaign.

We'll see how Esch and Carter match up on April 15, when the FEC filings are due and the two candidates hold their first debate.

    Somebody named Jake... (0.00 / 0)
is kicking the stones out of Street Sweeper on Leavenworth over this same topic.

Probably the most cogent and direct debate on the silliness of LS's bias. Sweeper is cyber-sputtering all over his keyboard.

Whoever this Jake person is - lets hire him!

Go Rich Carter, Go Jim Esch. Beat that boob Lee Terry!

    Good summary Dave!

    Here is my questions... (0.00 / 0)
...Jim defined himself last cycle with the issue of campaign finance. His rejection of PAC money created a clear distinction between him and Terry.

What will define his campaign now?

It was one point of distinction... (0.00 / 0)
It was certainly not the only one.

Political Action Committees are not inherently evil - and the hundreds of thousands of dollars that Terry has received from large corporations bears out the message. If Terry wants to go there, that's great - Esch will still own him on the issue.

We're not going to let Lee Terry, the corporations, and the Republican leadership in Washington play by one set of rules, while we play by another in the name of the moral high ground.

So far, opportunism.  It's one of the reasons I'm going with Carter.

    I saw that... (0.00 / 0)
Good defense of the plan. Leavenworth Street, of course, will just ignore it or resort to personal attacks as usual.

Richard Carter as the Democratic nominee (0.00 / 0)
He's a military guy (served in Iraq & Afghanistan) who clearly knows his stuff and can clearly and articulately defend the Responsible Plan.  Good luck challenging him on military issues, Mr. Terry.

He's an economics professor with some solid ideas on how fix our struggling economy.  Good luck with that "fiscal responsibility" mantra, Mr. Terry.

What's Terry going to talk about in a face-off with Carter?  It's not like he can hype the bill he passed renaming that post office...

Can anyone compare their retail politicing skills? (0.00 / 0)
I've seen Carter get better at making the speech in front of small crowds, but how good is Esch at that?

Its pretty obvious that Carter looks like a better general election candidate on paper, and he's pretty impressive when he talks about a lot of issues. REALLY looking forward to the debates!!!

Rich Carter is very good on the issues (0.00 / 0)
I haven't really seen Carter outside his "comfort zone" of Iraq/economy/education yet, but he seems pretty quick on his feet.  His speechifying is good, though a bit nervous at this point. I think he'll get the hang of it quickly.

Esch is a very likeable guy one on one, and answers questions well.   He and his family also ran one hell of a good campaign.  Jim's stump speaking was never too great, as far as I recall.  I remember at his campaign kickoff in '06, he mostly talked about tactics, which I thought was odd.  Not exactly inspiring.

    2006 vs. 2008 (0.00 / 0)
The campaign that Esch ran in 2006 worked well in that election cycle, but they can't rely on just a grassroots campaign again.  Esch is going to have to do more "traditional" campaign-work this cycle if he expects to compete against Terry, most notably fundraising.  And as someone else brought up, his decision to essentially abandon his anti-PAC stance (that was his chief issue in 2006) won't sell well with independent voters that he'll need to get in his column.

    [ Parent ]
    I don't know (0.00 / 0)
I honestly wonder how many people who aren't politically engaged really knew about Esch's "no-PAC" stand last time, or even know what a PAC is.  Admittedly, it's the first thing I'd say on his behalf while making phone calls or whatnot, but it was never among the questions I got about Esch or among the top concerns of voters I talked to.  The pledge played into his general image as an outsider, of course, and that more generalized appeal was probably a large reason why he was able to capitalize on the anti-incumbent fervor of that cycle.  But I doubt that nixing it this time will do more harm than would've been done had he tied his hands again with so much less time to fundraise and an opponent so much better prepared to fight.
